In 2014, the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the 62’ double-hulled voyaging canoe, Hōkūle‘a, embarked on a voyage around the world. Led by Nainoa Thompson, Master Navigator, the 47,000 mile, 36 month voyage will visit 24 countries and 68 planned landfalls, crewed by 300 individual sailors on 25 individual legs.

Founded on a legacy of Pacific Ocean exploration, they seek to reclaim the art, science and exploration of non-instrument navigation. Track their journey and message of unity and environmental stewardship online at www.hokulea.com.

35 years ago Nainoa navigated the Hokule’a from Hawaii to Tahiti by wayfinding, followed by six other major voyages. Wayfinding, the ancient Polynesian navigation, taught to Nainoa by Mau Piailug, a navigator from a small island called Satawal, in Micronesia, uses the sun, stars, currents, ocean swells, seabirds, clouds, colors and windshifts to navigate.

Thompson became the first Hawaiian and Polynesian since the 14th century to practice the art of Wayfinding on long-distance ocean voyages, and is one of five Master Navigators bringing Wayfinding back from the brink, and keeping the tradition alive by training the next generation. He is the recipient of numerous community awards, including the Unsung Hero of Compassion, awarded to him in 2001 by His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama on behalf of the organization Wisdom in Action; and the Native Hawaiian Education Associations Manomano Ka ‘Ike (Depth and Breadth of Knowledge) Educator of the Year Award. He currently serves as a member of the Ocean Elders and leads Hokule’a’s voyage.

The undertaking is so vast, the Polynesian Voyaging Society has partnered with the University of Hawaii to develop classroom curriculums tied to voyaging dynamics of mathematics, science, geography, language arts, world history, meteorology, technology and environmental and cultural sustainability. They will share details of their journey with thousands of students using an unprecedented technological setup, via its escort vessel, Hikianalia, which was donated by Dieter Paulmann, of Okianos Foundation for the Sea, a 2013 YachtWorld Hero Finalist. How has your Nominees efforts made a difference for the better?

When Nainoa traveled to Polynesia 40 years ago seeking one of the last Polynesian Master Navigators to share and trust their soon-to-be-lost secrets with someone outside of their culture, Wayfaring was on the brink of disappearing. Over the last 40 years, he has practiced and refined Wayfaring – navigation without instrumentation – and is training many navigator students to carry on the science and tradition. He is a modern day explorer, adventurer, navigator, historian, and teacher.

How will being recognized as a YachtWorld Hero further your nominee’s cause?

Nainoa Thompson and the Polynesian Voyaging Society has received significant coverage, in Hawaii particularly, but most boaters have never heard their story. Knowing about them at the beginning of their journey allows us to follow their exploration and adventures for the next three years. The stories of Wayfaring are of international importance, as are their prayers for environmental stewardship in the face of vanishing resources, rising seas and changed climates. Sharing their stories with the recreational boating industry may resurrect Wayfaring in other parts of the world, while raising awareness of our ocean health.

The Surfrider Foundation, run by current CEO , is an international non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 250,000 supporters, activists and members and 90 chapters worldwide. For an excellent overview, view Jim’s introduction of Surfrider Foundation here: http://www.givinglibrary.org/organizations/surfrider-foundation and view his bi-weekly blog on important ocean pollution issues and solutions here: http://www.surfrider.org/jims-blog.

Each year the Surfrider Foundation identifies priority campaigns to focus their work and ensure they achieve important on-the-ground protection of our oceans, waves and beaches. While they provide support to 84 on-ongoing campaigns, priority campaigns are where they go the extra mile to achieve meaningful conservation advancements. Surfrider has three major areas of focus in 2014: Clean Water, Ocean Protection, and Rise Above Plastics.

The Rise Above Plastics mission is to reduce the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics. http://www.surfrider.org/programs/entry/rise-above-plastics.

The Blue Water Task Force is their volunteer-run, water testing, education and advocacy program. Their chapters use this program to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions.
http://www.surfrider.org/blue-water-task-force

Know Your H2O is their program designed to educate people on the link between freshwater management issues and the impact on our oceans, waves, and beaches. They advocate for practical and environmentally sound solutions. http://www.surfrider.org/programs/entry/know-your-h2o.

Urban runoff is the #1 source of ocean pollution. Water running off our properties picks ups pollutants like fertilizers, pesticides, animal poo, and fine sediment as well as oil, brake pad dust and exhaust from cars.

The Ocean Ecosystem Program protects and restores ocean ecosystems through a proactive approach to conservation. Their core areas of work include: Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Offshore Drilling, Renewable Ocean Energy, and Marine Spatial Planning. http://www.surfrider.org/programs/entry/ocean-ecosystem

Sheri Tonn was one of the founders of Citizens for a Healthy Bay (CHB) in 1990, now working for over 24 years to clean up, restore and protect the waters of Commencement Bay and South Puget Sound. She served as board president for many years, and continues to serve on CHB’s board today chairing the organization’s Policy & Technical Committee, a volunteer group made up of chemists, attorneys, engineers and government officials. Sheri played a key role in overseeing the Superfund cleanup of Commencement Bay in the early 90’s. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry and she is Vice President for Finance and Operations at Pacific Lutheran University. In addition to her service with Citizens for a Healthy Bay, Sheri was one of the founding board members of People for Puget Sound and she served on that organization’s board for many years.

CHB enlists the participation of more than 500 volunteers each year, representing every segment of its community’s population, in restoring natural habitat areas around the bay, removing litter and debris from shorelines and educating people about the importance of protecting the community’s biggest resource, its waters.

Their work is important not just to citizens but also to the health of the different species of salmon that migrate down the Puyallup River as fingerlings and search out places to shelter before heading to the open ocean. CHB’s many natural habitat sites serve as ideal temporary hideouts to help the salmon avoid predators and find food to sustain them until they are ready for the next stage of their journeys.

How has your nominee’s efforts made a difference for the better?

Thanks in large part to the work of Sheri Tonn, Citizens for a Healthy Bay has played a lead role, since the early 90’s, in engaging citizens to work cooperatively with businesses and government agencies to transform Commencement Bay from one of the most polluted bodies of water in the country to a thriving and valuable recreational resource for everyone.

CHB’s current work focuses heavily on educating people throughout the Puyallup River Watershed about how everyday activities of all kinds of people have become the biggest source of pollution threatening Puget Sound. CHB staff members are working in Buckley, Orting, Sumner and Puyallup, educating people why it is important to pick up and properly dispose of their pet’s waste, wash their cars on their lawns or at a car wash instead of in the street, quit using so much fertilizer on their lawns, and fix their leaking vehicles. CHB teaches these things to middle school students and their teachers, right on the banks of the puyallup River. The students teach their classmates, friends and families about what they’ve learned and, gradually, the message is being understood and behaviors are beginning to change.

Through CHB’s efforts, hundreds of acres of shoreline have been resorted to natural habitat, thousands of citizens throughout the Puyhallup River Watershed, young and old, have learned how to prevent water pollution, hundreds of businesses have learned to operate without polluting, thousands of boaters have learned how to protect their waters from contamination and millions of salmon have had a better chance of surviving and reproducing.

How will being recognized as a YachtWorld Hero further your nominees cause?

Sheri’s recognition as a YachtWorld Hero will help CHB, a small, highly effective, grass roots environmental organization gain a great deal of visibility. CHB devotes almost its entire budget to expenses directly associated with its programs and services to its community. CHB must rely on its website, newsletter ad social media to bring its water pollution prevention messages to its constituency, which includes hundreds of boaters and yacht club members. The reach of YachtWorld’s website, with its 2.5 million visitors each month, would be a huge boost to CHB’s visibility. This would not only greatly enhance the organization’s ability to reach its target audiences but would also help in attracting new funding sources to support its work.

Sailors for the Sea, which “educates and engages the boating community in the worldwide protection of the oceans,” was the outcome of David Rockefeller’s work on the Pew Oceans Commission, which identified profound and alarming ocean health issues. As an avid sailor with a life-long love of the ocean and a philanthropist with a keen interest in environmental issues, David envisioned an organization that would educate the boating community about these ocean health issues and lead boaters to protect the waters we all love.

How has your Nominees efforts made a difference for the better?

Their flagship programs – Clean Regattas, Rainy Day Kits, and Certified Sea Friendly – directly engage boaters in fulfilling their vision. Their Ocean Watch Essays, are monthly articles that discuss current ocean health issues with with opportunities to take action. Their Clean Boating section lists steps boaters can take to reduce their environmental impact. Their link library of non profit organizations dedicated to a specific realm of conservation are proudly promoted here.

In 2012, Matt Rutherford became the first person to solo circumnavigate North and South America. He completed the non-stop 27,000 mile journey in 10 months in a tiny, old sailboat. Solotheamericas.org

Matt has embarked on a new project, oceanresearchproject.org, that aims to make ocean research more affordable. The typical running costs for scientific research in the open ocean is between $6,000 and $15,000 a day, depending on the organization. With Ocean Research Project they have a daily running cost of $112 a day.

Together with scientist Nicole Trenholm, Matt completed the Atlantic Garbage patch expedition on August 15, 2013. They spent 80 days at sea collecting data at 40 survey sites over 2,600 miles of the mid-Atlantic, sending some of the samples to the University of Japan for toxicity research and others to a lab to check the plastic for bacteria which shouldn’t be there. They are also quantifying the data to see just how much of this plastic is out there. They shot footage during the expedition and are creating a educational based adventure documentary. Next they will create a 3 day lesson plan, which will be interrogated into the Maryland public school system teaching thousands of 5th to 7th graders about the problems of plastics in the ocean. On April 1, 2014 they are leaving on another expedition – sailing from California to Japan non-stop doing marine radiation testing, filming the expedition, and repeating the education process.

“We’re living in a changing economic environment; you can no longer think big boats, big crew, big budget. Instead, a non-profit should think small boat, small crew, small budget. By doing this, you not only reduce the cost of the expedition, but also the overhead.”

How has your Nominees efforts made a difference for the better?

Matt has already proven that he does what he sets out to do with his solo circumnavigation of the world. During the upcoming first of three new expeditions, Matt and his crew will be at sea for 75 days collecting data, while sailing 6,500 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is home to the Atlantic Garbage Patch and coincides with one of the five major oceanic gyres. The Sargasso Sea Gyre is a huge spiral of seawater formed by colliding currents. Most offshore sailors have seen floating junk on the high seas, but it’s a problem that has not been thoroughly explored in the mid-Atlantic. It’s the poster child for one of the worldwide ocean problems: plastic that’s initially created with human hands, then ends up in the ocean, often found inside animals’ stomachs.

“I caught the bug and it’s too deeply imbedded to stop. Since I’m going to keep sailing I might as well do it in a way that gives back to the sea.”

How will being recognized as a YachtWorld Hero further your nominee’s cause?

The YachtWorld Hero nomination will bring visibility to Ocean Research Project, which aims to make ocean research more affordable. It will provide scientific data and education about the changes within our oceans to inspire people to action. Equipped with a team of expert scientists and sailors, they will embark on expeditions to some of the world’s most dynamic parts of the ocean. The expeditions will be carried out on a sailboat which is outfitted in a manner conscious of economical practicality yet environmentally-friendly to perform as a mobile research and observation station. Their scientific data and audiovisual educational mediums are used for several purposes.

Jill Savery, Head of Sustainability, America’s Cup Event Authority, recently succeeded at making the 34th America’s Cup a sustainable event, setting the standard for all future America’s Cup events and other marine-related events worldwide. Jill is a Gold Medal Olympian (1996 Synchronized Swimming), earned a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from Yale University, and leveraged both experiences to put her in the position she’s in today.

How has your Nominees efforts made a difference for the better?

She was responsible for making the event zero waste, carbon neutral and environmentally sustainable. For example, she and her colleagues kept event waste largely out of landfills (85% diversion rate) and plastics out of the San Francisco Bay (no single use plastics were sold or distributed by the organizers). Most of all, Savery has made environmental responsibility integral to the sport of big-time sailing, which, if one thinks about it, it should be.

How will being recognized as a YachtWorld Hero further your nominee’s cause?

Savery is on the leading edge of a vital trend: World sporting events and large corporations are gradually becoming the vanguard in sustainability programs. More and more these are genuine efforts, and because of their notoriety can have an impact that few governments or environmental groups can match.

Joel Aberbach has been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 40 years, and his official title is Coast Guard Auxiliary District Seven Assistant District Staff Officer, Sea Partners and America’s Waterway Watch. Participating in numerous other Auxiliary missions from the very beginning, Joel discovered his calling in the Sea Partners program which is a part of the Auxiliary Marine Safety program. Sea Partners is an environmental education and outreach program focused on developing awareness of maritime pollution issues and marine environmental protection regulations. Joel started the program in the Miami-Dade community decades ago, and served as the marine safety officer at all levels of the Coast Guard Auxiliary organization.
In the last 40 years, Joel Aberbach has volunteered a conservative estimate of approximately 25,000 hours. These volunteer hours were spent informing and educating fellow Auxiliarists, the recreational boating public, and the general public, both adults and children, about protecting and preserving our marine environment. Joel Aberbach truly is a hero and is the District 7 Coast Guard Auxiliary’s nominee to be your YachtWorld hero.

How has your Nominees efforts made a difference for the better?

Striving to inform a new environmentally responsible generation, Joel traveled the state of Florida many times over to educate and assist numerous Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers in starting an active Sea Partners program in their geographical area. As a direct result of his efforts, he and his team reached over 10,000 youth in the Miami-Dade 2012 summer camps program and the Miami-Dade school career day programs. Due to lack of funding of summer camps in 2013, that figure was somewhat reduced this past year but remained strong. Joel not only personally attends many of these events and presentations, but he recruits and trains a Sea Partners team each year to participate.
In addition, he has personally rescued injured and ill turtles and other marine life from the bays and oceans. He helps to coordinate a proper newborn turtle release annually into the ocean, educating, informing, and thrilling attendees at this event.
Preventing pollution at the numerous marinas in Dade County, Joel works with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as well as other Auxiliary members to educate and assist marina management and staff in implementing all requirements of the Clean Marina Program which is a private partnership with strong federal and state support. Joel also coordinates and participates in the final inspections of the marinas for their Clean Marina designation.
For the International Coastal Cleanup Day held the third Saturday in September each year, Joel coordinates five cleanup sites in the Miami-Dade area. His volunteer activities include recruiting and training the leaders for each of the sites, ensuring promotion to all Coast Guard Auxiliary members in the county, and encouraging local merchants to donate volunteer water and lunch. To increase participation, he also acquires free access and parking for volunteers to go to Miami Sea Aquarium.
Throughout all of these activities, Joel continually sends educational updates to his extensive database of Auxiliarists who then forward the information to their own networks. The articles that Joel provides on local exotic species, changes in marine environmental laws, articles on garbage dumping in the oceans as it relates to the tourist trade, the local economy, and the health of swimmers and animals ensures that the community at large is kept apprised of important environmental information.

How will being recognized as a YachtWorld Hero further your nominee’s cause?

Recognizing Auxiliarist Joel Aberbach as a YachtWorld Hero would generate articles in The Miami Herald and other local publications affording much welcome publicity to school career days and summer camps, as well as reinforcing the importance of educating the public about protecting the marine environment. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary public education courses emphasizing the need to protect our waterways and prevent damage and pollution to our marine environments would also be promoted. Further, new recruits to the Coast Guard Auxiliary would be attracted by the publicity of these important missions.
